Koh Lanta- an island undergoing positive changes
Koh Lanta is a beautiful island that has managed to maintain it’s special atmosphere despite the fact that many people have found their way here the during the last few years. This is still a place where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, the cheap and very good food and the fantastic beaches. What you do not get is the commercialism which many tourist traps all over the world mistakenly seem to think is what the average person on holiday really requires.
The weather today:

Of course, for those of you who want discotheques, girlie bars and Mac Donalds Koh Lanta is not the right place!. Here we just enjoy the peace and tranquility. Take an early morning walk, a tour in the jungle or obviously a dive trip during the day.

As the evening draws in enjoy a quite drink in one of the small beach bars and watch the most sensational sunsets. We know that we all share the same sun but after having watched a few sunsets on Koh Lanta we think you to will wonder weather there is a very special sun just for Koh Lanta. The whole island seems to be enclosed in the most fantastic shimmering pink light.

Ban Saladan
At the north end of the island you will find, Ban Saladan,  the village where apart from the Lanta Diver dive centre you will also find banks, exchange offices, shops
and restaurants. Even if the locals have done their utmost to satisfy the tourists different requirements Saladan is still a Thai village with all that that it entails. Email cafés are situated side by side with the local fisherman, travel agents share space with the greengrocers and next to the old fashioned electrician you can watch the latest DVD films.

Beaches

Klong Dao beach
All resorts and tourist services you will find along the beaches on the west coast of the island. Starting from the north the first beach you come to is Klong Dao Beach, which also is our personal favourite. Klong dao beach is 3 km long and the beach slopes very slowly into the water making it a perfect beach for children, also at low tide the packed sand is perfect for walking and running. Even if this is the beach which houses most resorts you will, even during the height of the peak season, feel as if you have the beach to yourself. Here you also find many of the restaurants and bars. But as previously mentioned, you will not find too much loud noise and girlie bars. Some of our favourite resorts are also located on Klong Dao, you can learn more about these under “accommodation”.

Long beach
The real name of this beach is actually Phrae Ae beach but it is commonly known as Long beach. This beach is situated just south of Klong Dao and is nearly as long as Klong Dao but when you enter the water from Long Beach you will find yourself on deep water considerably faster than on Klong Dao. Long Beach starts of nice and smooth but the further south you go the more you have to watch out for rocks and sharp stones in the water.
On the whole the resorts on this beach are a bit more basic, cheaper but still clean, comfortable and cosy. Without access to statistics we have the feeling that Long Beach attracts the slightly younger guests and if you want to find something resembling a party, Long Beach is the beach that comes the closest. Some of the resorts have actually had trouble with loud music from certain bars but as this changes from one year to the next it is impossible to give recommendations or cautions. Just remember Koh Lanta is a very quiet and peaceful island so what is considered noisy on Koh Lanta might well be considered quiet on another location.

Klong Khong och Klong Nin beach
Let’s carry on southwards and now we are about 10 kilometres from the northern tip of the island and Saladan. We first reach Klong Khong Beach and another few kilometres will bring us to Klong Nin beach. The beaches become more and more tranquil and the resorts cheaper and more basic. The exception to this is Sri Lanta on Klong Nin which is quite a luxurious resort with prices to match. The beaches are still very nice even though they should be seen at low tide. At some places along the beach there are many sharp rocks in the water making bathing and swimming hazardous at other places the sand bottom is
perfect. The choice of restaurants is not that extensiv down here even though every resort has it’s own restaurant, some of them very good. What should be kept in mind when considering finding accommodation further south on the island is
transportation. If you are a diver you need to get in to Saladan in the mornings back to the resort in the evening. The roads are still terrible apart from 10 km in the far north where we now have the use of a newly concreted road. The best form of transport is to rent a moped but make sure to take it very easy the roads are extremely hazardous. If you are a diver we pick you up from your resort but be prepared, it is still a very rough journey from this part of the island.

Even further south...
If we carry on South we come to Klong Hin beach,Kan Tian bay, nui Bay, Klong Jark bay,

and Mai Phai bay. If you decide to live down here you must really be prepared for long rough journeys to the norhten end of the island. Apart from this there are several fantastic bays and beaches and the natural environment is breath taking. Do not be surprised to find a monkey in the tree above your bungalow when you wake up.

Koh Lantas east coast
On the east side of the island there are no resorts. The administrative centre of the island Koh Lanta old town is situated here together with a few sea gypsy villages. Koh Lanta town is made up of many old Chinese style wooden houses built 60-100 years ago Lanta Old Town and the rest of the east coast of the island is completely free from resorts and maybe this is what is so fascinating. Well worth a visit on the moped but do not forget to bring the Thai dictionary they do not
speak a lot of English here! When we have time of this is where we go ourselves.
